Heat stress

The hot weather can cause more problems than just the forage: Fertility rates have dropped and mastitis rates increased due to the heat stress on the cows.

Temperatures above 25°C are outside a cow’s comfort zone. This results in decreased feed intake, panting and saliva loss and reduced rumination. This then can then cause a drop in immune function, acidosis and reduced milk yield.

So don’t worry if you’ve seen a drop in bulling cows or increased repeats – now it’s cooled off the cows should be able to re- channel their energy back to reproduction.

Keep checking your cell counts to ensure they’re dropping again and speak to one of the vets if you’re concerned.
